UAE to hold Eisenhower post-mortem

Dubai: The UAE national golf team are holding an Eisenhower Trophy post-mortem on Tuesday, after finishing a disappointing 61st out of 72 nations at the World Amateur Team Championships in Turkey, last week.

Khalid Yousuf, Abdullah Al Musharrakh and Sohail Al Marzouqi combined for a 60 over par score of 490, after four rounds of strokeplay were shortened to three due to lightening at Antalya Golf Club.

The UAE had targeted a top 30 finish to buoy the team ahead of the forthcoming Asian Amateur Championships in Bangkok, Thailand from November 1-4 and the Pan Arab Championships in Bahrain from November 24-30.

UAE pro golfer gets sponsorship boost

Dubai: The UAE’s first professional golfer Ahmad Al Musharrakh has been given a boost with the news that he will be sponsored by golfing brand Titleist.

The 21-year-old turned pro last month ahead of the 2012 Mena Tour and he has now been signed up by Titleist through Prosports International, meaning he will use their golf balls, driver, gloves and Vokey wedges.

Ara Nakhnikian, Managing Partner of Prosports International, said at the signing ceremony: “Having a UAE national like Ahmad joining the paid ranks is great for the profile of the sport in the region and Titleist are proud to be associated with the first UAE national golf professional.

Pakistan golfer’s devotion to a game he loves

RAS AL KHAIMAH // Shafiq Masih is the first to admit local knowledge played a key role in his opening Mena Tour triumph last week.

The Pakistan No 6, a former golf instructor at Dirab Golf and Country Club, returned to the familiar fairways of his “home course” in Saudi Arabia to seal a play-off victory and move third in the Order of Merit.

It is an adage that familiarity breeds success, yet Masih attributes the new trophy to something altogether more influential.

Pakistan’s Masih closes on Mena Tour leaders

Riyadh: Shafiq Masih moved into third place in the order of merit standings following his play-off victory in the American Express Dirab Golf Championship, the third event on the Mena Golf Tour, last week.

The Pakistani, starting the final day three shots off the pace, beat his nearest challenger Craig Smith of Wales at the first extra hole after both finished level at eight-under in regulation.

With this victory, which carried a cash prize of $9,000 (Dh33,058), Masih has accumulated a total of $10,563 in earnings from the first three events to narrow the gap to leaders England’s Ross McGowan ($12,028) and Zane Scotland ($10,803).\\
